Often when I am reading an informational text on the computer, I will save it as a PDF and upload it onto Word documents so that I can highlight and add comments directly onto the page. I will do this as well when I have a hard copy in front of me. I highlight what I feel is important and what stood out to me. This is where I utilize the comments, I write down why it stood out to me or what key word I can use to sum up the highlighted text.
I do not like to do this very often in a book because I struggle with the idea of writing directly into the pages. However, when I am working with a book that is packed with information or a book that i will use directly for a project, then I will write and highlight and tab every page that I feel is important or that I will use for my paper. I am crazy about using paper tabs. They are a life saver when I need to refer back to a section in the book. These are the strategies that I use so that I can comprehend what I am reading because we all need a little support when texts get complex.
Good readers and writers are...
Mentally...ready to try and try again
Motivated...to create something new
Socially...accepting to new and controversial ideas
Strategic...in the way they plan their writing process
Monitoring...their own strengths and weaknesses
Coordinating...with others for support
Connecting...to the world around them for ideas
Creative...in the way they express themselves
HI Martha, I too love tabs! I just bought some more of the thin strip ones yesterday. I admire your printing out the PDF version of what you are reading from online texts. I wish so adamantly that I could do the same. The ink and the other, (my two teens and hubby) use the printer often so in an effort to keep the budget within working range wins. I do however, have a notebook for each class that I have and I write MANY notes. If you were to browse my notes and books you will see my many definitions of words everywhere! I like to write in books, it feels naughty yet smarty pants like, lol. I like the color scheme for your blog, it is kind on the eyes and is appealing.
