Parent involvement in students education tends to taper off as students get older or the student never had their parent involved in their education as much as their peers. Parent involvement is key to students having good attitudes in school as well their behavior in the classroom. Parent involvement in the classroom is what I would like to have in my future class when reading controversial books or discussing controversial topics. 

This article outlines some good reasons to take into consideration the importance of why parents should read young adult literature. One of those reasons include a window into a time that a parent may have forgotten what it was like to be young and have trouble relating to their young teen. 

Reading a variety of books and doing a variety of lesson plans is great. However, it is important to establish a safe and inclusive classroom that is mindful of students diversity and the different ways they learn. A welcoming environment allows students to shine in their work. 

An educator should not push her own beliefs onto the students, rather they should help students find their place on the spectrum about how they feel about certain issues that they feel strongly about or that they themselves are sensitive towards. This article provides some steps into how to create a safe classroom to discuss controversial topics as well as how to be a guide and not a sage. 

In high school educators help students become proficient or fluid readers through close reading strategies, text annotations, and text-dependent questions. These are just a few examples that this article goes over, it is a guide to helping students enjoy reading more and to struggle less.
