Hello everybody, my name is Martha and I am currently attending the University of New Mexico to get a degree in secondary education with a concentration in English language arts with a minor in bilingual education. I've worked as a educational assistant in special education. I have watched the struggles of children who hate to read and write but given the right tools they become writers and readers. I have worked with an array of disabilities and I believe that gives me a different perspective from my fellow peers because I know how to work with students who are challenged in an educational setting. This has allowed me to gain a tremendous amount of patience and flexibility. I have also had the opportunity to work with students who are English learners and I want to be able to support these students in the classroom so I have taken numerous classes on multilingualism in education and am working towards being a Spanish bilingual teacher.
I aspire to be a teacher who can make a difference in a child's educational path by inspiring them to become life long readers. It is true that the more a person reads, the better of a writer they are. But there is a difference between reading mechanically and reading to comprehend. This is crucial because a lot of young adults dislike reading. They do not comprehend or they are simply bored. I hope to make reading fun and adventurous for young readers. Books are neat little packages full of surprises waiting to be unpacked.
Young adult literature is complex and often comes in many different forms such as comics and poetry. Enhancing a readers ability to read enhances their comprehension of the world around them. The world is full of literature, everything we do requires some form of reading. Whether it be words or pictures, our goal is to communicate with someone else. With the right amount of passion and the right teacher, students can excel in reading and writing. I believe that any body can read and enjoy it. I hope to open up a literature path for my future students.
First I just want to say good job on your project and being understanding of those students that may need more help. As I read your postings I feel like your views of education seem to overlap each other because I keep asking more questions as I got farther into this project and as I did more it brought up more questions and I see that you gone through the same steps as I have. Anyway I agree that the parents and the students must be able to have a safe space to feel comfortable and learn. As a young student I myself struggled with reading comprehension and memorizing. As a child you think memory is learning, however it can hide the real issues for years. As for this new way of learning known as hybrid learning or distance learning it is a option that seem to be working well from a learning standpoint, however we will see when we become the teachers and how it feels to be on the other side of learning and planning. I believe that you are on the right pathway to figuring these topic on bilingualism, inclusion and just find the best way to educate these students and like we learned in this class, that every student learning experience is unique towards their creativity, skills, comprehension, learning and those who hide their ways of learning. As a person who sometimes struggles with reading sometimes a audiobook helps me I get through the point of struggling, just some food for thought. I see that your mission in teaching is to help as much students as you can because you have the ideals and the drive to do so and as I become a history teacher I see that our subjects will always keep crossing paths, so I hope we can stay in touch with one another so we can pick each other’s brains and once’s again good luck and stay save during this covid.
